vetchling

sweet pea

Apparently, not all things that look like "wild sweet peas" are wild sweet peas. After doing some research, I've decided that this is actually a meadow vetchling.

It's pretty common- according to the guidebooks- but I've never seen one before.

Peter Dynomite- HEY! It's been almost a WEEK since my last one! I'm doin' pretty well, I think!

Nikon- Ohhh, come on, it's only been a month since my last one, and a couple weeks before that for my first one. ;)

Something very similar to these are all over the place around Villigen as well and I've been preparing a photo to post. In fact, I spent a bit of time trying to identify mine, and I think mine are Lotus corniculatus (commonly known as birdfoot deervetch in the US), but I have to go out into the field and take more photos to be sure. They look so similar to me! Take a look at the photos on Wikipedia:

Yes, I guess it's the striking color of this shot that made me lose all sense of the legume lineage laced through your blog.
I know, lame :)

Z- Oh geeeeeeez, I am TERRIBLE at naming flower species. For years, I though Creeping Charlies were violets. I'm not even positive that these are meadow vetchlings, but after spending a couple hours on Wikipedia etc., that seems to be the most logical identification. Good luck on definitively identifying your birdsfeet. :)

Paul- I'm one of those perplexing people who's pleased by puns and adores alliteration. ;)
