umbrellas
Overcast/drizzly for the fourth day in a row. The fungi are loving it.
These are tiny umbrella-like mushrooms growing out of the side of a tree.

I had not seen this before. I suspect the tree is suffering through some disease that has killed enough wood for the mushrooms to feast on. I know I am in the process of losing a 40 years old Japanese Maple.
1. The tree is still alive and shows no signs of disease.
2. Most fungi that do not grow out of the ground grow out of the sides of trees. I doubt these little mushrooms are any less healthy for the tree than lichens.
As always, I appreciate your optimism.
What an interesting photo!
