The Monmouth County Fair has contests open to all residents of Monmouth County. Entrants may submit art, crafts, homegrown flowers, homegrown vegetables, home-canned goods, and baked goods. The photography contest (in the art category) always has a yearly theme, and I was hoping that maybe I could enter some of my photography, just for kicks... but this year, the theme is "landscapes."
Landscapes! I never do landscapes! I don't like landscapes! I'm not good at landscapes!
But here is an attempt at a landscape.

I think it's pretty good. I like the zig-zagginess. To me, you've got a pleasing mix of sand, water, sand-with-water, and sky. If anyone complains about the colors being too drab, well, they probably have too romantic an idea of the Jersey shore.
I suppose it's conceivable that the visible curvature of the Earth is an artifact of your camera, but I tend to doubt it. I also kind of wonder why so many people were so skeptical for so long of the Earth's roundness when the curvature is actually visible to the naked eye.
It's the camera. I used to think I could see the curvature of the earth, too- especially in the sky and the clouds- but subsequent years of physics/astronomy and the study of light have taught me that... well... the earth is REALLY REALLY BIG. I mean, in the grand scheme of the universe, it's pretty teensy, but compared to me and to my eyeballs and the distance that my eyeballs can see... IT'S BIG.
The point here is that the horizon is in fact flat, and the camera lens has a tendency to warp perspectives. I think there's a name for it.
Hm. Now that you mention it, maybe all the times I remember seeing curvature (as opposed to merely signs of it) were actually in pictures.
The reason I thought the camera would do OK in this case was because I thought your shot was not especially wide angle, and the horizon was reasonably close to the middle of the frame.
I like it - I like the colors and composition, & it looks like a nice seascape.
Put a cute baby, a dog, and maybe a nun in it, to enhance your chances of winning.
i like this version better than the other... but i think you could lighten it up just a touch... or tweak the contrast...
Wonderful beach photo.
I really like this, but I agree that more contrast would not be a bad thing.
To those who criticized the contrast-
I could try lowering the white point, I guess, but the jetty itself is already almost so black as to be overwhelming. And it was a bit overcast, so the gray sky and gray sea really did blend into each other like that. Not much I can (or want to) do there.
@Nikon- Ha! 100% on target! That's exactly why I haven't entered the fair in a few years.
