The Pequon
Today, we celebrate FLASHBACK FRIDAY with a 35mm photo taken in 2002!
The Pequon--a white 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis station wagon with fake wood paneling--was my first car. It was named after Captain Ahab's "Pequod" 'cos it handled like a boat, looked like a boat, was roughly boat-sized, and probably floated. Besides which, my parents had always called it "the white whale" or "the Moby Mercury," so continuing the Moby Dick theme seemed appropriate.
(It's also the car I took to my senior prom.)
This was taken for my first photography class, and I think it was my first experience in taking candid photos of people... and trying to mollify them after they heard the shutter go SNAP and gave me dirty looks.

Last January, I featured a photo of Naval Weapons Station Earle due west of Sandy Hook.
The part of Earle shown above--a rail line used for transporting weapons and such--is located much further inland. Earle, as it turns out, is actually two bases ("Main-side," located around Colts Neck [marker A], and the "Waterfront Area," located around Sandy Hook [marker B]) connected by Normandy Rd., a 15-mile rail/road line.

This is a fairly old photograph (circa 2006, huzzah for Asbury Park), but I still like it, and I'm running low on photos 'cos I'm a little short on time at the moment. (Grad school applications, due in like a week, and I still have no idea who my third reference will be. Cripes.)

Carmella's Cafe, Pier Village, Long Branch. They serve coffee, danishes, and a sparse selection of paninis. If you're a foodie, go to one of the other restaurants in Pier Village... but if you're like me and prefer informal dining experiences (and if you happen to be wandering through Pier Village anyway), check it out.
...I was gonna title this "reflections," but I have, over the course of my life, created a ridiculous number of things with that title. It's even one of my commonly-used (overused, even) tags.

It's a big wooden cross stuck in the middle of beach sand, lest you forget that Ocean Grove is actually a Methodist townlette.
(I don't think that "townlette" is an actual word, but it's... a teensy town subset of Neptune Township.)
It is SO Methodist, in fact, that Ocean Grove was the source of a nationwide civil union controversy. (Speaking from my own experience and observations, the structure in question is NOT a religious place; it is a roof supported by four wall-corners--very shack-like and very open to the public.)

Taken last year, but regardless, most of yesterday's puddles turned to ice today.

Apparently, the promised Nor'easter was actually snowy and icy a little further north, but down here, we just got a boatload of rain.
And wind.
Right now, it's very very windy.

I've been noticing that the resolution of my 700-pixel photos is a little... crummy. Even when I'm resizing from a reasonable starting point (like 1960 pixels wide -->700), and even when the resolution of the starting photo isn't THAT bad (maybe not GREAT, but not HORRENDOUS).
I scaled this one at a slightly higher dpi instead of the usual 72 to see if it makes a TEENY bit of difference. We shall see. Maybe it'll just take longer to load.

This photo- which was in fact taken in Monmouth County and does nicely show off the drainage grates present at Brookdale Community College- does not actually fit the guidelines I try to set for this site. And, in fact, I actually do have a surplus of other photos at the moment, so it's not strictly necessary for me to post this now. But I'm allowing it today because I can. ;)

In Sandy Hook's Mortar Battery, there are a few passageways and tunnels. Most of them are locked away behind scary doors like this one; if you try to peer into the crack between the door and the wall, you can feel a steady cold breeze on your skin from the passageway. Once, many years ago, somebody had broken the lock on the door featured above, and I stood in the passage. I didn't venture too far inside, because it was quite dark and filled with puddles of questionable depth.

Thanks, guys, for the heads up, although I seem to be too late to get the official code, so I'm typing it out myself. (Do I have an hour to spare? No. Has this ever stopped me? No! ;) ) Incidentally, if any of the links are screwed up, let me know and I'll correct them. Hey, anyone got any tips on how to effectively steal code? "View page source" doesn't seem to work for individual posts.
In Ocean Grove (which is not Ocean Township but is closeby), most of the streets are one-way. This makes navigating them a bit of a trick.
